What causes type 1 diabetes?
Viruses

No one knows for sure why people get type 1 diabetes, but many scientists suspect that viruses may cause type 1 diabetes.

Genetics

Type 1 diabetes seems to run in families; the DNA mutation can be passed on from generation to generation. Also this type of diabetes seems to be more common in certain racial groups.

Researches are trying to determine how mistakes in specific genes cause diabetes. They have identified several different genes that might make a person to develop type 1 diabetes, but genetic factors cannot fully explain the development of diabetes.

Autoantibodies

Antibodies are proteins your body make to destroy bacteria or viruses.
Sometimes, antibodies attack your body's own tissues, and the beta cells that produce insulin are slowly destroyed by the body's own immune system
